There is a plethora of jargon that is specific to the world of sports betting. When you are placing bets, make sure to bookmark our glossary of betting terms and use it as a reference whenever you come across a word or phrase that is unfamiliar to you.
A
The accumulator, also known as a parlay bet in North America, is a wager that consists of two or more selections, and in order to create a winning ticket, each side of the wager must win (or push).
Any live wagering option, as well as the total amount wagered on a particular event, is referred to as “action.” Bookmakers take action on all of the odds that are displayed on their websites.
Bets in horse racing that cover a horse’s chances of winning, placing, and showing are collectively referred to as “across the board.”
Appear on betting boards after the main lists have been posted. This game has been added. They are common in college football, and their presence is primarily driven by the demand of the fans. An added game could also be a match from the previous day that was postponed due to inclement weather, similar to how a rainout works in baseball.
After extra time (AET) odds: AET odds are posted primarily on soccer matches when extra time is added at the end of regulation time due to in-game stoppages. AET odds are available for live betting.
Athlete, horse, or greyhound that fails to finish in a paying position during a race.
Odds that are higher or lower than the main posted line are referred to as alternate lines. In basketball and football, point spread and game total betting are common.
American odds are one of the “big three” types of odds, along with fractional and decimal odds. The (-110) American moneyline is the same as 1.91 decimal odds and 10/11 fractional pricing. On a winning $110 wager, all three formats return a $100 profit.
Futures odds on horse and greyhound races posted at least one day before the race. Ante-post betting is common in Triple Crown races such as the Kentucky Derby.
Arbitrage wagering (abbreviated ARB) is a betting style in which all possible outcomes of a single game are covered. ARB betting options are uncommon and appear when sportsbooks disagree on the appropriate odds for a match.
Asian handicap: Asian handicap odds start at 0.25 goals and can go as high as 2.0 goals in soccer. Because a draw/tie option is not available, these are two-way bets.
ATS: Against the spread (ATS) odds are intended to generate equal action on both sides of a competition. Bettors may have a choice between Las Vegas as a -3.5 point home favorite and Denver as a +3.5 point road underdog.
Australian Open: The first of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments for men and women, held over two weeks in mid-January.
B
Backdoor cover: When a score helps bettors cover a spread bet but has no effect on the game’s outcome. If Baltimore is a -10 point favorite and leads 35-21, Cleveland bettors earn a backdoor cover if the Browns score a late touchdown to make the final score 35-28 in favor of the Ravens.
A bad beat occurs when a wager is on the verge of winning but then becomes a losing ticket. When points are scored late in a match, it is common for a bad beat to occur. Bettors on game totals, point spreads, and money lines will occasionally get a bad beat.
Bankroll: Money set aside or deposited into an account for betting purposes. A player’s bankroll grows with each winning wager and shrinks with each losing wager.
Bankroll Management: Bettors should manage their bankrolls in the same way they would manage a personal bank account. Setting wagering limits, looking for the best odds value, and only betting what one can afford to lose are all important aspects of managing a sports betting budget.
A bet runner is a professional bet runner who places wagers for professional bettors in order to conceal their identity from bookmakers.
Belmont Stakes: The third jewel in thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. The race is held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, on the first or second Saturday in June (three weeks after the Preakness Stakes).
Any wager involving money placed at a sportsbook, casino, racetrack, or poker room is referred to as a bet.
A betting exchange is a third-party intermediary who is not a sportsbook or a bettor. An exchange posts bets with two sides, and the betting option remains available until both sides have been wagered on. Betting exchanges generate revenue by charging a small commission (juice) on winning tickets.
Betting strategy: A variety of plans used by bettors to gain an advantage over bookmakers. Prior to placing bets, primary betting strategies should include proper bankroll management and extensive research.
Book: A bookmaker or sportsbook that posts odds and accepts bets is referred to as a book.
Bookie: An abbreviation for a bookmaker.
A bookmaker is a licensed person who sets daily betting odds and accepts wagers. A linemaker is another term for a linemaker.
Breeders’ Cup: A Grade I thoroughbred horse racing series held on the first Friday and Saturday of November. The series is held at various race tracks. The most Breeders’ Cup events have been held at Santa Anita Park and Churchill Downs.
Buy points: Bettors can buy points by using different point spreads and game totals to get a better line. If the spread is set at +2.5, a player can buy one point to raise the line to +3.5. With each point purchased, the juice attached to the odds increases.
C
Calder Cup: Given to the best rookie player in the NHL during the regular season.
College Football Playoffs: The NCAA football playoffs that determine the national champion.
Favorite is another word for chalk. If the Lakers are a -3 point favorite over the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles is the underdog.
A chalk bettor is a player who places the majority of their bets on favorites.
Matches with a circled icon have set betting maximums that are capped at a low amount. When bookmakers face unknowns such as player injuries, weather, or rumors that surface prior to a match, games are usually circled. Opening odds and prop bets are frequently circled as well.
The final betting odds posted prior to the start of a competition are known as the closing line.
Co-favorite: Two or more sides with equal odds of winning. Bookmakers may list co-favorites to win the NBA Finals championship, as is common with futures odds.
Combine: A series of fitness tests used to evaluate amateur athletes by scouts from professional teams. The NFL Scouting Combine is a high-profile precursor to the annual NFL draft.
Commission: Also known as vigorish and juice, commission is the bookmaker’s cut of any bet. It is also the amount deducted by a betting exchange from winning bets.
The Commissioner’s Trophy is given to the winner of the MLB World Series each year.
Correct score: Bettors are given a list of possible match outcomes. In soccer, players can wager on a match ending at 0-0, 5-0, or any score in between. The favorite is the most likely outcome, while the underdog is the least likely.
Cover/covering the spread: Any bet in which a favorite wins and the final score is greater than the point spread. If New England beats Miami 32-21, the Patriots will cover the -10 point spread. If the Patriots win 29-21, they fail to cover the spread, and bets are graded as losers.
D
Decimal odds: Common in Europe, decimal odds are one of the “big three” types of odds, along with fractional and American odds. In American odds, a 1.91 decimal line equals -110 and 10/11 in fractional pricing. On a winning $110 wager, all three formats return a $100 profit.
Dog: Short for underdog, a dog is considered the least likely to win and is priced higher. If the Atlanta Braves moneyline is set at +125 and the Houston Astros are listed with -120 odds in baseball, Atlanta would be a dog.
A double action bet, also known as a “If bet,” automatically transfers the stakes and/or winnings from a successful wager to a second betting option.
A double bet is a wager that is twice the size of the normal wager. When one side appears to be vastly superior to another, bettors frequently double their stake.
Double result: A single betting option that combines a game’s halftime score and the game’s final score.
A double-header is two games that are played on the same day. A double-header is most commonly seen in baseball when a game from the previous day is rained out.
Any contest in which the final score is a tie. A draw is usually graded as a PUSH, and the original bet amount is returned. Three-way lines, which offer tie/draw as one of three betting options, are an important exception.
Drift: Betting odds that increase after the initial line is posted. Drifting refers to a moneyline that moves from +220 to +225 to +230.
E
Each-way betting is popular in horse racing and involves betting a single amount on a horse to finish first or second. If the horse finishes first, both bets pay, but only one bet pays if the horse finishes second. A first-place finish always yields a higher return than a second-place finish.
Gaining a competitive advantage through extensive research or having insights that are not widely known.
The English Premier League (EPL) is the highest-ranking football association in the United Kingdom.
Even money odds: Odds that return the exact amount bet. A $100 bet on Fractional (1/1) American (+100) or Decimal (2.0) odds would yield a profit of $100.
Exotic Bet: A wagering option other than point spreads, moneylines, and game totals. The most common exotic bets are proposition bets, specials, and parlays.
The amount of money that a bettor or bookmaker stands to lose on any given wager is referred to as exposure.
F
Favorite: Any side with a negative price. In an NFL matchup, San Francisco (-360) would be the moneyline favorite over Arizona (+280).
FIFA World Cup: The World Cup championship, held every four years, is the most watched soccer tournament on the planet. In 2026, the World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The final four teams in the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament are referred to as the Final Four. Prior to the National Championship game, two Final Four games are played.
In sports such as basketball, soccer, and football, a first half bet is a wager on the outcome of the first half. The spread, moneyline, and game total are the most popular first half betting odds. As first half bets, a variety of team and player props are available.
First/Last/Anytime Scorer: These are three pre-game prop betting options that are available on many sports. In the NHL, all skaters have odds on scoring the first and/or last goal, as well as scoring at any point during a game.
Fixed odds: When a wager is placed and accepted by a bookmaker, the line becomes fixed odds. If a bet is placed on Las Vegas at +3.5 odds and the line drops to +3.0 before the game, players who bought the Raiders at +3.5 keep the previously accepted fixed odds. Also known as moneyline odds.
Fractional odds: Popular in the United Kingdom, fractional odds are one of the “big three” types of odds, along with decimal and American odds. A 10/11 fractional line equals -110 in American odds and 1.91 in decimal pricing. On a winning $100 bet, they each return $90.91.
The French Open is the second of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments held over two weeks in late May and early June.
A futures bet is a wager on an event that will occur in the near or distant future. Futures betting on the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, NBA Finals, and World Series is a popular option. Soccer futures, major horse races, and golf and tennis tournaments are also available.
G
Over/Under wagering on how many goals/points/runs will be scored in a game. If the total for a baseball game is set at 7.5 runs, bettors must decide whether the total runs in that game will be over or under eight runs.
Once a competition has concluded, bookmakers will officially mark the wager as a winner, a loser, or a push. Winnings, also known as push refunds, are distributed after a bet has been graded.
Grand Salami: Bookmakers offer Over/Under odds on the total number of goals/runs/points scored in all league games on any given day. If the NFL schedule has seven games, the line could be set at 36.5 combined goals with -110 on both sides as the most common juice.
H
Half ball handicap: Soccer betting odds in which the point spread is 0.5 goals, plus or minus.
Wagers placed on the outcome of only the second half of a competition are known as half-time bets. Bets on halftime can be placed during the intermission or as live wagers once the second half begins.
Handicaps are betting odds set by a bookmaker to level the playing field. When they play a perceived weaker Atlanta team, New Orleans may be given a -7.5 point handicap before or during the game. If the Saints win by eight points or more, they cover the spread and produce winning wagers.
Handicapper: A bettor who researches matchups before placing a wager. This also applies to bettors who make predictions on various sporting events.
Handle: The total amount of money accepted by a bookmaker on a single game or event. In Nevada, the total handle bet on Super Bowl 54 was $154.7 million. When Kansas City defeated San Francisco in a come-from-behind victory, bookmakers made a $18.8 million profit.
The Hart Trophy is given to the most valuable player in the NHL during the regular season.
Hedge: A risk management tool that is most commonly used with parlay betting. Hedging a bet entails betting on the opposite side of an original wager to ensure a certain return. A hedge bet can be used to reduce the initial risk of a potentially losing wager.
Holding your own: A bettor who is on a winning or losing streak but is just breaking even on a series of bets.
Home field advantage: The perceived advantage gained by a team when playing in familiar surroundings at their home stadium.
Hook: A half-point increase in point spreads and game total odds. A hook ensures that a bet will not be graded as a push. One side will win, while the other will lose.
I
If bet: An If Bet is a type of parlay that consists of two or more wagers. A player applies the stake and/or profit of a winning wager as a bet on a second game if the initial wager is successful on a two-team if bet.
In-play betting: Wagers placed after an event has begun. Bookmakers offer multiple in-play betting options during most major sporting events, also known as LIVE betting.
J
Two or more sides with the same betting odds on the same event are considered joint favorites.
Bookmakers set the juice, also known as vigorish, which is attached to spread and total betting options. If $110K is wagered on both sides of Minnesota -3.5 (-110) versus Green Bay +3.5 (-110), bookmakers profit $10K from the juice on the losing bets.

Kentucky Derby: The first jewel in thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. The first Saturday in May is race day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
L
The Larry O’Brien Trophy is given to the winner of the NBA Finals each year.
Laying points refers to betting on a favorite. Dallas as a -2.5 point favorite over the Los Angeles Rams is laying 2.5 points. To cash a winning ticket, the Cowboys must win by at least points.
Layoff: A strategy used by bookmakers and players to reduce risk in a specific market. Parlay bettors may be able to set up a guaranteed profit by placing a layoff wager on both sides of the last open bet on a ticket.
Limit: Bookmakers set different high and low wagering limits for different sports and betting options. Players should set and adhere to personal betting limits as part of a proper bankroll management system.
Line: A bookmaker’s betting odds.
Linemaker: A person or group that sets daily betting lines and prices, similar to a bookmaker.
Pitchers are listed with daily baseball betting odds. If a listed pitcher does not start the game, bets are usually voided and stakes returned.
Live betting, also known as in-play wagering, is available once a sporting event begins. As a match progresses, spreads, moneylines, and totals are adjusted and re-posted. Prop options include the next goalscorer and the correct final score.
Tipsters frequently use the term “lock” to entice bettors to purchase handicapping advice. The only true locks in life are death and taxes.
A longshot is a perceived inferior team, also known as an underdog. Longshot prices are always shown as positive. With a +9.5 point spread, the New York Jets would be a long shot against the New England Patriots.

March Madness is an annual NCAA college basketball National Championship tournament that lasts three weeks, from mid-March to early April.
The Masters is the first of four major Grand Slam golf tournaments. The Masters Tournament is held each year in the middle of April at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
Cashing tickets on both sides of a betting option in the middle. When a point spread moves up or down before a game, bettors have an opportunity to middle.
MLB: Major League Baseball is the world’s top baseball league, with teams based in the United States and Canada.
MLB Draft: MLB teams select prospects from colleges, amateur baseball teams, and high schools in June. The MLB draft consists of five rounds, with the majority of players selected being assigned to minor league teams.
Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top-ranked soccer league in North America, with teams based in the United States and Canada.
Moneyline: A straight up bet with no point spread in which bettors must predict the winner outright. Favorites have a negative (-185) price, while underdogs have a positive (+165) price.
Multiple bets: A multiple bet is a single wager that consists of at least two sides on a single ticket, similar to a parlay. To cash multiple bets, all sides must win (or push).
A double is a two-sided parlay ticket.
Treble: A single three-sided parlay ticket.
Trixie: Three sides equal three double wagers and one treble wager.
Three sides result in three single bets, three double bets, and one treble bet.
Yankee: One four-leg parlay, six double bets, and four treble bets are created by four sides.
Four sides result in four single bets, one four-leg parlay, six double bets, and four treble bets in Lucky 15.
Five sides result in one five-leg parlay, five four-leg parlays, five single bets, ten double bets, and ten treble bets.
MVP: A player who is recognized as being the most valuable to their team during the regular season or playoffs. Tom Brady is a four-time Super Bowl MVP, and betting on who will be named the Most Valuable Player is a popular professional sports futures betting option.

A nap, like a lock, is a handicapper’s recommended best bet on a daily betting card.
NASCAR, or the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, is the sport’s governing body.
NBA: The National Basketball Association is the world’s top basketball league, with teams based in the United States and Canada.
NBA Draft: Each June, NBA teams pick amateur players in a two-round draft.
NCAA: The governing body for all college sports in the United States.
The National Football League (NFL) is the world’s top-ranked gridiron football league, with teams based in the United States.
The NFL Draft is a seven-round event held each April in which NFL teams select top college football prospects.
The National Hockey League (NHL) is the world’s top-ranked hockey league, with teams based in the United States and Canada.
NHL Draft: Every June, NHL teams pick college players as well as pro European prospects in a seven-round draft.
Betting options that are cancelled by a bookmaker are graded as no action. Bettors get their original stakes back.
Prop and special bets are wagers that go beyond the standard moneyline, point spread, and game total odds. The most common novelty bets are team and player propositions.
O
Odds: Betting lines established by a bookmaker on various events.
The three main odds formats are American (+100), Decimal (2.00), and Fractional (1/1).
Oddsmaker: A person or group that sets daily betting lines and prices, similar to a linemaker.
Favorite odds: One side is regarded as far superior to the other and is priced with odds that provide very little value.
Reviewing the lines at various sportsbooks in order to find the best priced odds.
Off the board (OTB) games are displayed on betting boards but do not have odds associated with them. If a star player is injured, bookmakers may remove the odds from the board.
Predicting the overall winner of a tournament or playoff competition is known as outright betting.
On game total options, an Over bet is the inverse of an Under bet. If the total for a Bengals vs. Cardinals NFL game is set at 41.5 points, over bettors must have a combined final score of 42 points or higher.
Over/Under: A figure that indicates how many runs/goals/points will be scored in a game. Bettors must decide whether the combined scores of both teams will go over or under the number. Game total odds are another term for game total odds.
P
A parlay is a single bet that consists of two or more sides, also known as an accumulator or multiple. To generate a winning ticket, each side must win. A parlay ticket’s selection that ends in “push” is void.
A banker is a favorite side that serves as the foundation of a parlay wager, to which other sides are added. On a parlay ticket, New York (-130) would be the banker, followed by Detroit (+110) and Chicago (+120).
A payout is the amount a bettor receives for a winning wager. When a bet is placed, the potential payout on a betting receipt typically includes the original stake.
The PGA Championship is the season’s second major Grand Slam golf tournament. Held in late May at various locations throughout the United States.
Pick ’em: A betting option in which the odds on both sides are exactly the same. Atlanta (-110 vs. Miami (-110 ) is a pick’em game.
Point spread: The odds posted on a match to level the playing field. Favorites are marked with a negative (-6.5) point spread, while underdogs are marked with positive (+6.5) odds.
Post time: A race’s scheduled start time. When all of the horses are loaded into the starting gate, they are said to be “at the post.”
Power rankings: A ranking system that grades teams in a specific league from best to worst based on a variety of criteria.
Preakness Stakes: The second jewel in thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. The race is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, two weeks after the Kentucky Derby on the third Saturday in May.
Price: Another term for a bookmaker’s betting odds and/or juice.
Proposition bet: Also known as prop bets, proposition bets are exotic or special wagers available on most sporting events. There are hundreds of NFL Super Bowl prop betting options.
A proxy is an individual or group of individuals who place bets on behalf of others. The term is most commonly associated with non-Las Vegas residents who participate in season-long sports pools such as the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest.
The amount wagered by the general public on any betting option is referred to as public money.
Puck line: Hockey point spread pricing. Prior to a match, the favorite is usually given a handicap of -1.5 goals, while the underdog is given a handicap of +1.5 goals.
Any wager in which the outcome is a tie. Spread bets on both teams are graded as a push if the final score is 120-109 and the spread is 11 points.
Q
Any wager placed prior to or during any quarter of a sporting event is referred to as a quarter bet.
Before an NBA game, Boston could be a -1.5 point favorite to win the first quarter against Philadelphia, who would be a +1.5 underdog. LIVE betting odds will change frequently during the first 12 minutes of the game.
R
A recreational bettor is a player who bets infrequently or only on major sporting events.
Rec player wagers are treated as public funds. The inverse of a sharp or professional bettor.
Bookmakers assign a number to each betting option on the board, which is known as the rotation number. When placing a bet at a land-based sportsbook, bettors use the rotation number rather than the team name.
ROY: Awarded to the best first-year player in the majority of professional sports leagues. A popular futures betting option is to bet on who will be named Rookie of the Year (ROY).
Baseball point spread pricing is known as the run line. Prior to a game, the favorite is usually listed as -1.5 runs, while the underdog is listed as +1.5 runs. When betting live, run lines increase and/or decrease depending on the outcome of the game.

Second half bet: Any wager that focuses on the outcome of a competition’s second half. Bettors can place wagers prior to the start of the second half or make live bets once the game resumes.
The Selke Trophy is given to the forward with the best defensive skills in the NHL during the regular season (not a defenseman or goaltender).
Sell points: Using different point spreads and game totals, bettors can sell points. In football, a player who moves the line from -6.5 to -7.5 has sold one point. With each point sold, the juice becomes more favorable to the bettor.
Sharp: A professional sports gambler who uses extensive resources to make their bets. Sharps consider the big picture and place their bets based on their knowledge. Pro bettors always shop around for the best prices and will bet on favorites or underdogs if they feel they are getting good value.
Special bets, like prop and exotic bets, are added to a competition in addition to the more common moneyline, game total, and spread betting options. During major events such as the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament, hundreds of specials are available.
Spread betting: When betting on a competition, you can take or lay points. A spread bet would be Los Angeles at -7 point odds against New York (+7). To cash a winning ticket, the Rams must defeat the Giants by at least eight points. When betting on favorites, bettors lay the spread and take the spread when betting on underdogs.
Sportsbooks have become popular meeting places for bettors and sports fans alike, whether they are free standing shops or in dedicated space at land-based casinos. Sportsbooks accept bets on US events as well as action from around the world and have large screens where bettors can watch the action unfold.
A square is a novice or recreational player who is the polar opposite of a sharp or professional bettor.
Stake: The amount of money at stake when a bettor places a bet. All winning wagers and many bets that are graded as a push have their original stakes returned.
Staking method: varies depending on the bettor. Some players set maximum stake limits on each bet they place, whereas others use a percentage of their bankroll as their stake.
The Stanley Cup Trophy is given to the winning team in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs each year.
Odds that change quickly, typically as a result of a large amount of betting action by sharp bettors or syndicates.
Straight bet: A single wager on the moneyline, spread, or game total.
Syndicate: A group of bettors who pool their funds and use their collective knowledge to place bets on events. Syndicates will frequently bet large sums to move a line and then bet even more on the new price they helped create.
T
Taking points: A wager on the underdog. Baseball bettors who back Washington with a +1.5 run line are taking points. If the Nationals win outright or by one run, the tickets will be cashed.
Teaser odds: Any line that a bookmaker moves up or down to entice (tease) bettors. Players can use alternate lines to tease odds on a single game. They can also place a parlay bet using a sportsbook’s teaser card.
Teaser Card: A daily list of all games from a single sport with odds that are higher or lower than the prices posted on the main betting board. Teaser card bets require you to choose two or more sides.
Ted Lindsay Award: Given to the most valuable NHL player as voted on by active players only.
A ticket is a receipt issued by a bookmaker to confirm the acceptance of a wager.
Tip: Betting advice provided by tipsters and handicappers predicting the most likely outcome of an event. Tips should never be bet on blindly, but they can be useful when combined with a thorough pregame research strategy.
A tipster is a person or group who provides betting advice. Some tipsters provide free sports betting advice, while others charge a fee for their recommendations.

On game total betting, Under is the inverse of Over. If the total for a Lakers vs. Clippers game is set at 238, under bettors must have a combined final score of 237 points or less.
Underdog: As the inferior team, underdogs are assigned a positive number. If Washington is listed with (+280) odds, the Redskins are the underdog in a game against Dallas and must win outright to cash a winning NFL moneyline ticket.
U.S. The Open (Golf) is the third of four major Grand Slam golf tournaments held in late June at various golf courses across the United States.
U.S. Open (Tennis): The fourth and final Grand Slam tennis tournaments, held in late August and early September at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York.

The Vezina Trophy is given to the NHL’s most valuable goaltender during the regular season.
Juice is also known as vigorish. The standard vigorish price is (-110) and bettors must wager $110 to receive a $100 return.
The Vince Lombardi Trophy is given to the winner of the NFL Super Bowl each year.
W
Wagering: Betting on any event available at a sportsbook, casino, or racetrack.
The Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest, which began in 1988, is marketed as the ultimate football handicapping challenge. There are three contests centered on the NFL regular season to choose from: the SuperContest, SuperContest Gold, and SuperContest Reboot.
Wimbledon: The third of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments for men and women, held over two weeks in late June and/or early June. Wimbledon is held at London’s All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club.
